People with binge eating disorder are at risk of getting sick. Since they usually eat large amounts of fats and sugars, which do not have a lot of vitamins or minerals, they may not be getting the right nutrients.
People who have binge eating disorder and who are also obese are at additional risk for:
- High blood pressure
- High blood cholesterol levels
- Gallbladder disease
- Heart disease
- Certain types of cancer.
Social and everyday life is also affected. People with binge eating disorder are commonly upset by their binge eating and may become very depressed. Some people miss work, school or social activities to binge eat. Obese persons with binge eating disorder often feel bad about themselves and may avoid social gatherings.
Most people who binge eat, whether they are obese or not, feel ashamed and try to hide their problem. Often they become so good at hiding it that even close friends and family members do not know they binge eat.
People with binge eating disorder often try to control it on their own but are not able to control it for very long.
